THE TRAINING
WHERE IT
BEGINS
At SRPD, our K9 teams train with purpose - and it starts with the right foundation. We work with Spectrum Canine, one of the nation's leading police K9 programs, to ensure every team starts with the highest standard of preparation.
We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Working closely with Spectrum, we select each dog individually based on temperament, drive, and the specific needs of our department. Spectrum's training emphasizes clear communication, strong control, and real-world readiness, which aligns with our mission to build reliable, confident teams from day one.
Before hitting the streets, our teams train side-by-side with Spectrum's instructors in a rigorous POST-certified course covering obedience, apprehension, detection, and field deployment.

HOW IT
CONTINUES
Training doesn't just end at certification. Our K9 teams train together every week, building on core skills and advancing their capabilities in detection, apprehension, obedience, and safety.
We follow Spectrum's recommendation of at least 16 hours of structured training per month, broken into regular, focused sessions. This ensures our dogs stay sharp, our handlers stay prepared, and each team remains mission-ready - no matter the call.
WHERE IT'S
GOING
We are committed to growing a strong, sustainable K9 program: one that evolves with the needs of our community.
These dogs protect our streets, but they also play a vital role in building relationships by visiting schools, attending events, and highlighting the human side of police work. As we grow, we're focused on expanding our operational strength and our outreach.
Every donation, sponsorship, or show of support helps our K9s serve both in the field and in the community.
